Mini splits are indoor, wall-mounted blower units that are connected to the outdoor heat pump. They have a number of great benefits:

Compact & Flexible

Mini splits are small, and have a great ability to “zone” (heating and cooling individual rooms). Many models can have as many as four indoor air-handling units connected to one outdoor unit. The number of units depends on how much each zone needs to be heated or cooled.

Easy to Install, Easy to Use

Ductless mini-split systems are easier to install than many other types of space conditioning systems. The hook-up, for example, between the outdoor and indoor units requires just a three-inch hole through a wall for the “conduit” (the channel to carry liquid). The systems are also easy to use: many offer a remote control to make it easier to turn the system on and off if it's positioned high on a wall or ceiling.

Remotely manage your Mini-split system using a simple smartphone, tablet or PC via the Internet.

How does it work?

The mini-splits are controlled from a webpage or using an iOS or Android APP in a very intuitive way.

A wireless (Wi-Fi) device installed in each unit controls the operation.

A Server in the cloud manages the whole process.

 Features:

  •   Turn the mini-split on before arriving home.
  •   Change the program if the user is arriving late.
  •   Know the current room temperature of your home.
  •   Check if the unit is still on once out of your home and turn it off.
  •   Program the mini-split with a calendar scheduler in an easy, intuitive way.
  •   Available in several languages. (Also ºC and ºF)
  •   Save money without losing comfort.
  •   Get instant alarm notifications.

Discreet

Most manufacturers offer a variety of lengths for connecting conduits; if necessary, you can locate the outdoor unit as far away as 50 feet from the indoor evaporator! This makes it possible to cool rooms on the front side of a house, but locate the compressor in a more advantageous or inconspicuous place on the outside of the building.

Energy Efficient

Each mini split zone has its own thermostat, so you only need to condition occupied spaces. This will save energy and money. Mini splits have no ducts, so they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems. Air loss through ducts can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning (especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space, like the attic).

Many Design Options

In comparison to other add-on systems, mini splits offer more interior design flexibility. The indoor units can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall. Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units only are about seven inches deep and have sleek jackets.

VRF HEAT PUMPS

In the past 15 years, Japanese companies have brought variable-refrigerant-flow (VRF) or "minisplit" heat pumps into the U.S. market. Most VRF heat pumps can operate at extremely low temperatures without significant loss in performance. In Maine, for example, these systems have been successfully heating houses without any other heat source, even with outside temperatures as low as -18°F.

VRF heat pumps vary the flow of refrigerant in ways that significantly boost performance. Older, standard heat pumps operate at a constant flow, and are either on or off. VRFs also have improved refrigerants and sophisticated electronic controls.

  • Dawn, Thank you for the ceiling work. I have not inspected it myself yet but my tenant said it looks great. I'll likely have a look this evening myself, but I am confident in the quality. I'll be in touch come springtime.
